Maiden Voyage!

JULY 4TH ARRIVED WITH WARM SUNSHINE AND A CLOUDLESS BLUE SKY...

A spectacular day for a paddle, we thought. And as Cheryl had just handed over the plastic for a brand new kayak, we figured we’d get it in the water asap. So we pulled out of the Dicks’s Sporting Goods with the boat sticking out the back window of her Jeep and headed to the coast of nearby Newcastle, NH, to put in at the Coast Guard Station.

We paddled around, she in her kayak and I on my SUP, just enjoying the day. I headed for the outer harbor and hugged the coastline scanning the rocks for treasure, and before too long, spotted a colossal driftwood pole at least 10 feet long and 2 inches thick! After an awkward scramble on the rocks and a wrestling match with the pole, I woman handled that pole off those rocks and MacGyvered it onto my boat. What a score!

I knew Cheryl was back in the inner harbor, so I headed in, and there she was in full relax mode. She was fully reclined in her boat, legs out on the bow, with the sun on her face. I’m not sure she even left the dock area?? I mean, why paddle when you can drift? I roused her, and then we made our way back to the launch and rambled over to the cars to pack up the boats, and the pole of course!
